New Tutor Training Videos and Workshop
Posted by on September 24, 2004
Do your tutors and volunteers work with children who have problems understanding what they read? Tutors often find that children who don’t read fluently struggle with comprehension.
Reading for Meaning: Good Practice in Volunteer Tutoring is the latest in the series of LEARNS tutor training videos that includes Rosa & Melany: Reading in English, Yolene & Blayn: Reading Comprehension, and Lisa & Crystal: Learning to Read. This 22-minute video is designed to help train volunteers working with children who struggle to read fluently. The video introduces you to Emily, a second-grader, whose lack of fluency interferes with her reading comprehension, and includes a discussion guide with suggestions and tips for using the video to train tutors. The guide elaborates on the issues Emily has with fluency and
comprehension and the multiple ways the tutor works to help her overcome these challenges.
Reading for Meaning is available free of charge to programs of the Corporation for National and Community Service. To order your free copy, contact: nsrc-shipping@etr.org or learns@nwrel.org.
