Just the Facts: Homelessness in Los Angeles
Released in August 2004, “Just the Facts: Homelessness in Los Angeles” summarizes the latest statistics about homelessness in Los Angeles County, addressing local and regional counts, geographic distribution, families, youth, gender, race/ethnicity, age, citizenship, veteran?s status, physical and mental health, substance abuse, childhood experiences, education, employment, public benefits, length of time homeless, trends and causes.
**SELECTED FINDINGS
– Over the course of one year, an estimated 254,000 men, women and children experience homelessness in Los Angeles County.
– Recent local nightly homeless counts: Long Beach – 5,845; East San Gabriel Valley – 2,703; Glendale – 472
– Approximately 16% to 20% of homeless adults are currently employed, and 41% show employment within the last year.
– The number of shelter beds in Los Angeles grew from 2,452 in 1984 to 18,529 in 2003.
