“Voting in America,” a provocative collection of nine short films that aims to increase voter participation among disenfranchised communities in the 2004 elections, is being released on DVD August 15, 2004. The films include: Blackfire, about a Navajo punk rock band’s struggle to raise consciousness on the reservation and get out the vote; and Choose to Choose, which goes inside the Philadelphia jail system, where inspired social workers and a handful of motivated inmates have established a highly unusual voter registration and education campaign. Although the DVD is available for $25, sales work on a sliding scale. The producers encourage organizations that can afford to donate a bit more to do so, thus enabling other groups with much tighter budgets to have the DVD for free.
