Issue Brief on Lowering the Voting Age

Posted by on June 4, 2004

A new issue brief from the Education Commission of the States National Center for Learning and Citizenship explores legislation and initiatives in 10 states aimed at lowering the voting age. State legislatures are considering a variety of approaches, from partial votes starting at age 14 to resolutions urging Congress to change the voting age nationwide. Advocates believe that helping students get into the habit of voting could help drive young people to the polls, while others contend that students younger than 18 are not ready to understand and make decisions on complex ballot issues.
