Campus Compact launces S-L Policy listserv
Posted by on September 19, 2003
Campus Compact announces a new email list specifically for policy issues surrounding national service and higher education. With national service legislation and reauthorization of the Higher Education Act currently getting so much attention there has never been a more important time for Higher Education to assert its civic mission.
For example, in July the U.S. House proposed a $3 million cut to Learn and Serve America, the only national service program that supports service-learning. The actions of practitioners, students, and community members since have helped to encourage the U.S. Senate appropriations committee to restore Learn and Serve America to full funding in their version of the bill.
However, this $43 million is the same level of funding that Learn and Serve America has received since its inception in 1994. And yet, in the last round of grants Learn and Serve America was only able to fund one in every five higher education proposals. It is time to grow Learn and Serve America, our communities, campuses, and students deserve it and we must demand it.
This email list is designed to keep you up to date on current issues and to reach out to you for important action. If you are interested in joining the list please visit http://www.compact.org/national.
Please share widely.
