Paycheck to Paycheck: Wages and the Cost of Housing in America, released in May 2003 by the National Housing Conference.
Looking at the most recent census data available, the study found that for the nation as a whole the annual salaries for America’s elementary school teachers, police officers, licensed practical nurses, retail salespersons and janitors fall short of the amount necessary to qualify to purchase a median-priced home. On the rental side, both janitors and retail salespersons are unable to rent a one-bedroom apartment based on the accepted standard of 30 percent of their income.
