OUT OF THE DEVELOPMENT BOX
How residents of Port Alberni, B.C., the quintessential corporate milltown, have come to raise their expectations of local development and of themselves.

WHAT COUNTS
Swallowed whole, a recent publication on the measurement of inputs, outputs, and outcomes could jam up the metabolism of any nonprofit organization.

NEW BREED
Community Ownership Solutions channels charitable funds into businesses that create quality jobs and management opportunities for low-income Manitobans, and superior work for their customers. By creating 1,000 such jobs in the next ten years, COS hopes to jar loose the whole conceit that low wages and no benefits make for good renovation and construction.

COMMUNITY-DRIVEN RESEARCH
The Trent Centre has pioneered a structure and a strategy for putting the research capacity of a university to work meeting the information needs of neighbouring CED organizations.

ENTREWOMEN
Two years of research and development have issued in entrewomen.ca, a website dedicated to advancing the commercial capacity and interconnection of rural women.

FINANCING CED IN AN ERA OF CORPORATE SOCIAL INVESTMENT
Originally, the Canadian Youth Business Foundation expected to fund its support services for young entrepreneurs strictly by private sector donation. Now it is trying to do the job through private and public partners – each with its own interests and expectations of return on investment.

TEAM PLAYERS
What would it be like if government officials responded to CED initiatives not with detachment or disdain (or alarm) but eagerly, as committed partners? Its been happening in Nova Scotia. The whole experience has hinged on a few personalities who are determined to make public resources part of the local solution.
