Book announcement: Gathering Power: The Future of Progressive Politics In America, by Paul Osterman is being published by Beacon Press this February. The book argues that the political fortunes of progressives will be determined by community mobilization and not by better massaging of messages from Washington. The first chapter of the book makes this broad argument. Subsequent chapters draw from Osterman’s work over the past ten years with the Southwest region of the Industrial Areas Foundation. The chapter topics include strategies for building organizations , the role of religion in organizing , the impact on local and state politics, and labor market policy. The final chapter of the book returns to the broader themes and discusses how the book’s material fits into current discussions of social and political theory. Osterman teaches in the MIT Sloan School and Department of Urban Studies and Planning
