Martin Luther King Jr. and Cesar Chavez Memorial Vigil and Rally
April 4, 12-1pm
University of Pennsylvania, Perelman Quadrangle/Wynn Commons
(34th Street and Spruce)
March 31 and April 4 link important dates in the history of liberation and struggle. On March 31, 1927, farm worker organizer Cesar Chavez was born in Yuma, Arizona and on April 4, 1968, Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee, during his participation in the sanitation workers? strike.
Both men dedicated their lives to direct action organizing for civil and worker rights. Today, social justice organizers look to their legacies to inform our work. Chavez and King brought together people of faith, students, workers and community members to confront the powerful to win victories for the weak and marginalized.
Since 1999, Jobs with Justice and SLAP has used these important dates to mobilize student, people of faith, workers and community members to win victories for working families.
