Spiritual Activism: A Pathway to Collective Liberation
A Free Presentation and Discussion with Claudia Horwitz
When: Tuesday evening, August 22
7 to 9 pm
Where: Calvary Center
48th Street and Baltimore Avenue, West Philadelphia
There is a new culture of activism taking form in the world, one that calls on us to integrate the fullness of our spirits into the struggle for justice and political transformation. In this historic moment, we are finding more and more that we need to seek a deeper kind of liberation.
How do we recognize the connections between liberation from external systems of oppression and freedom from internal experiences of suffering? How do we move towards action that grows more deliberately out of being? How do we honor spiritual traditions and practices in ways that strengthen our movements for social change? Join us for a night of presentation, conversation, and reflection on these themes and questions.
Claudia Horwitz is a Philadelphia native and director of stone circles, a nonprofit organization that sustains activists and strengthens the work for justice through spiritual practice and principles. Claudia is a yoga teacher, activist, and the author of The Spiritual Activist: Practices to Transform Your Life, Your Work and Your World (Penguin Compass, 2002).
Sponsored by: Congregation Kol Tzedek and Bindlestiff Books, with Brandywine Peace Community, Calvary United Methodist Church, Congregation Leyv Ha-ir, Philadelphia Buddhist Peace Fellowship, Progressive Muslims of Philadelphia, stone circles, Training for Change, West Philadelphia Mennonite Fellowship, and Woodland Presbyterian Church.
