State of Our Values Meeting

President Bush will deliver his State of the Union Address on Tuesday, January 31st, at 9:00 PM. Sojourners–led by Rev. Jim Wallis–is calling for groups throughout the country to hold “State of Our Values” meetings in conjunction with the State of the Union. The Institute for the Study of Civic Values and the Arch Street United Methodist Church are working together to respond to this call.

We invite you to join us on January 31st from 8:00-10:30 PM at the Arch Street United Methodist Church–55 North Broad St (Broad & Arch)-to watch the State of the Union and to share our concerns about the values guiding the federal government today.

Does the federal government now work to “establish justice, secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity, and promote the general welfare”–as called for in the Constitution? Or has the government abandoned these principles as we understand them? This is what we will be discussing.

Rev. Robin Hynicka, Pastor of the Arch Street United Methodist Church; Rev. James Allen of the Vine Memorial Baptist Church; Sister Mary Scullion of Project HOME; and Rabbi Avi Winokur of Society Hill Synagogue will offer their own perspectives on these questions.

I will be providing up-to-date information on the federal budget cuts proposed in the FY06 Federal Budget, slated for a final vote the next day–February 1st.
