Dealing with Homophobia in Schools

The first of the 2005-2006 diversity programs presented by the Penn State Great Valley Diversity Action Council is scheduled for November 2, 2005. The Diversity Action Council invites you and your colleagues, friends, and family to a presentation and community discussion panel addressing the issue of homophobia in schools. You are also invited to a reception hosted by the Education Division from 4:00 to 4:30 p.m. to meet members of the Penn State Great Valley education community.

If you are an education professional such as a teacher, administrator, or school counselor or if you work in social services or community outreach you should attend. While the focus is on schools, this topic also applies to higher education, businesses, and our community.

Mr. Tom Sechrist, an education consultant, substitute administrator, strategic facilitator, and professional life coach, will make a brief presentation concerning:

? Definitions and Levels of Homosexuality and Homophobia
? Is Homosexuality a Choice?
? Why Do We Care?
? Resources Available

The presentation will be followed by a panel discussion involving gay students, parents of gay youth, gay parents, school officials, homophobia educators, and Gay Straight Alliance leaders.
