COMMERCIAL CORRIDOR LIGHTING WORKSHOP

This workshop will:
? Give planners, property owners, and others involved in commercial corridor development an understanding of the importance of lighting in the success of these corridors.
? Present practical aesthetic and technical approaches for lighting commercial corridors.
? Highlight funding strategies to implement the lighting approaches.
? Suggest changes in street lighting policies and funding methods in the City of Philadelphia.

Content:
? Mark Keener, Brown Keener Bressi- A general overview of commercial corridor development, including planning strategies to create pedestrian friendly places through lighting design.
? Al Borden, The Lighting Practice ? The use of lighting in a commercial district, including street, pedestrian, shop windows, and doorway lights. Images and the relative effectiveness of each approach will be presented. Discussion will include various lighting, and costs for installation and operation. This presentation will also include a discussion of Philadelphia?s current street lighting policy and how it could be changed to provide more benefit to commercial corridor development.
? Marc Morfei, Center City District ? The CCD?s pedestrian lighting program, its effectiveness, costs, and the funding strategies used to implement and maintain it.
? Ian Kelley, Atlantic Avenue Local Development Corporation ? An account of the AALDC?s experience with lighting commercial doorways along Atlantic Ave. in Brooklyn. Development of the project, including public/private sector planning, funding, and the effectiveness and community acceptance of the installed system.
