Mirrors and Windows: Oral Histories of Mexican Farmworkers and Their Families

Here’s info about events for two books published by New City Press. The first features the book of interviews with Mexican farmworkers in Kennett Square PA; the second features oral histories with residents and workers of Philadelphia’s Chinatown.

Mark Lyons, editor of Espejos Y Ventanas/Mirrors and Windows: Oral Histories of Mexican Farmworkers and Their Families, will participate in Taller Puertorriqueno’s Meet the Author series.

Espejos y Ventanas is a rich volume of interviews documenting the working lives and incredibly strong family/community networks created by the farmworkers of Kennett Square, PA. Published in Spanish and English (in the same volume) these oral histories are both a mirror in which the Mexican community can reflect on their own lives and journeys as well as a window through which other communities can see into the lives of their Mexican neighbors. While each of the 16 stores is unique and personal, all share common themes, visions and experiences: for example, the harsh realities of trying to eke out an existence in a small village near Morole?n or Puebla, or the painful decision to send fathers and brothers to El Norte and leave wives and mothers and sisters back home.
