Taking the Lead: Using the Arts to Make the Grade
A Professional Development Conference

March 5, 2005

With increased pressure on teachers to improve student performance on the PSSA tests and to meet state and district standards for all core subjects under the No Child Left Behind Act, this conference will offer K-12 arts specialists, classroom teachers, and teaching artists in the five-county region the opportunity to learn how the arts can be used to maximize student learning. Leading arts educators representing the region’s finest arts institutions, professional artists, and master teachers will guide participants through this process.

In the morning of March 5, outstanding Pennsylvania curriculum expert, Dr. Catherine Cullen, will model best practices in how to use the arts to deliver the Pennsylvania Department of Education’s new assessment anchors for the PSSA tests, to meet state and local arts and academic standards, and to design and implement arts-based interdisciplinary curriculum that also meets state and district requirements.

In the afternoon of March 5, experiential workshops will be facilitated by leading artists and arts educators in visual arts, music, dance, and theater arts providing participants with endless creative ideas and resources they can use in the classroom.
