Greater Philadelphia Cares presents a special workshop series

Focus on Education

Mark your calendars for a series of workshops which focus on what volunteers can do to support our children’s education. This series, planned in partnership with PHENND, Institute for the Study of Civic Values, and Philadelphia Public School Notebook, will bring volunteers into public schools to discuss pressing current issues, learn about the great work that’s being done in the community, and take initiative to make a difference to the school children of Philadelphia! Presenters will include dynamic teachers, administrators and students of the schools, as well as educational experts and children’s advocates.

October 6, 6:00-8:30pm: Literacy
Why do so many kids lack proficiency this basic skill, and what can we do about it? Learn about Greater Philadelphia Cares’ highly successful Reading Stars programs from the educators who developed it. The featured speaker is Holly Haggerty from Bright Sky Learning speaking of this phonetics-based literacy program.

October 13, 6:00-8:30pm: Civics Education
How do schools teach students to be good citizens? This workshop will explore voting, volunteering and everything in between! Great for educators and volunteers alike! Featured speakers include a representative from Institute for the Study of Civic Values.

October 20, 6:00-8:30pm: Arts Education
It seems that music and art suffer the first and deepest cuts when school funding is scarce. How can the community support programs that work to engage creativity in students and keep them in school? Featured speakers include Stephen Wilensky, Director of Music Department of Central High School and a representative from Philadelphia Art Museum Education Program.
