WHYY and the American Friends Service Committee (http://www.afsc.org/) are inviting you for an important event for our African community in Greater Philly. We want at least 30 African immigrant community members to be represented in this event, which will be videotaped and used in other educational projects of the WHYY station.

THE NEW AMERICANS, a seven-hour television documentary that follows four years in the lives of a diverse group of contemporary immigrants and refugees as they make the age-old journey from around the globe to start new lives in the United States, raises many of the complex issues facing immigrants, refugees, and the communities that receive them.

The March 23rd THE NEW AMERICANS event will include a reception and preview screening of two short segments of the documentary and will feature facilitated small group discussions. Guests will include members of Philadelphia’s African and Latino immigrant communities.

Spanish and Arabic interpretation will be provided.

The Host of the event will be Camilo Perez-Bustillo, Director of Project Voice, AFSC’s national immigrants’ rights initiative. A Colombian born and raised in New York by immigrant parents, Perez-Bustillo is a scholar, author, and human rights activist. He spent most of the past decade in Mexico working as a journalist and professor of Media Studies and Law. He recently completed an appointment as the Haywood Burns Memorial Chair in Civil Rights Law at the City University of New York.
