Bryn Mawr?s Writing for College Program for Young Women, Ages 16-18
June 22-July 12, 2003
Writing for College, a three-week residential writing program at Bryn Mawr College, prepares academically talented young women ? high school juniors, seniors, and recent graduates – to write well for college in a program that?s intensive, supportive, and fun.
In the program, the academic, recreational and college preparatory dimensions are interwoven to create an integrated experience whose aim is to create a community of writers. All experiences, including seminar, workshop, tutorials, student readings, field trips, college visits, guest writer/speakers and personal interactions, work together to challenge and stimulate the community.
The academic dimension
Students read essays, poetry, short fiction and a longer work while participating in intensive, seminar-style discussions of these shared texts. In daily writing workshops, students experiment with a range of genres and share their work with each other, giving and receiving feedback. In private tutorials, faculty members assist students in all stages of the writing process, including developing, revising, and honing their work to produce a final portfolio of polished writing.
The recreation dimension
Students take field trips to institutions in and around historic and culturally-rich Philadelphia, such as the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Barnes Foundation and Independence National Historical Park. On evenings and weekends, they read aloud at open-mic nights, attend talks by writers and other creative artists, and visit nearby French Creek State Park.
The college life dimension
Members of Bryn Mawr’s professional staff and recent college graduates offer orientation sessions and informal one-to-one assistance on a range of topics relevant to managing college, such as the admissions process, financial aid, time management and computer skills. Students also have the opportunity to tour area campuses.
