Brunch for Teachers and Labor Activists
Posted by on April 11, 2003
On Saturday, April 19th, Norman Diamond, co-author of _The Power in Our Hands: A Curriculum on the History of Work and Workers in the United States_ is going to visit Philadelphia, and the Industrial Workers of the World would like to host a brunch for teachers and labor activists who are interested in meeting him.
It will take place at 10:30am at our office, 4530 Baltimore Avenue.
We want to get a sense of how many people are interested, so please let me know as soon as you can if you’d like to come. Email me at mitchchanin@hotmail.com.
_The Power in Our Hands_ was published in 1988. Norm Diamond is a long-time labor activist and the past president of the Pacific Northwest Labor College. Diamond’s co-author, Bill Bigelow, is one of the founders and core activists in Rethinking Schools.
I think the book is a great resource for teachers, and I know several people who’ve had a very good experience using it in their classrooms. According the Association for Union Democracy, “The Power in Our Hands is still the best example of participatory techniques applied to the teaching of Labor History. Power in Our Hands provides a great series of activities and shows how such activities can be built out of different episodes in US labor history and taught in a way that engages people without sacrificing historical value.”
Hope you can make it, and take care, and take care,
Mitch
