Argentinean scholar, Alicia Partnoy’s presentation I Lived to Tell: Writing, Justice and the Disappeared, will bear witness to Dr. Partnoy’s personal encounter with abuses to human rights in her native land. Based upon her 1986 autobiography, The Little School, (La Escuelita), Alicia Partnoy will reflect on compelling scenes of arbitrary arrest, politically motivated murder and government practices that include torture and intimidation. Joining Partnoy will be Dr. Sa?l Sosnowski, also an author on politics and literature of Argentina. Dr. Sosnowski will introduce and discuss themes of Repression, Re-democratization and Memory Building in contemporary Latin America. He is Professor of Latin American Literature and Culture from University of Maryland and Director of Hispam?rica a journal devoted to Latin American writing.

Alicia Partnoy’s presentation will be both testimony and historical account of internment and incarceration during Argentina’s “Dirty War” (1976-1983). Partnoy’s story issues out of her detention by the secret police and her experience of brutal losses within her family and community. Partnoy’s presentation also draws upon her work editing and anthologizing statements by women and men dedicated to opposing civil rights abrogation in Argentina: Nunca M?s (1984) and You Can’t Drown the Fire: Latin American Women Writing in Exile (1988).
