What: The first statewide forum devoted to communities and local governments working to control and regulate land applied sewage sludge. This forum is open to the general public, community leaders, Township Supervisors, Solicitors, and anyone dealing with land applied sewage sludge in Pennsylvania. Speakers at the event include:
– Vicki and Bill Smedley (Lycoming County) of Greenwatch, Inc. and the Pennsylvania Environmental Network (PEN). The Smedleys will speak about PEN’s role in assisting communities to deal with land applied sewage sludge, and the resources available to communities.
– Sandy Smith (York County)(invited) of PEN’s Sludge Team. Sandy will discuss the Pennsylvania programs dealing with sewage sludge, why sludge is dangerous, and why Pennsylvania’s “beneficial use” sludge spreading program fails to protect communities.
– Russell and Antoinette Pennock (Berks County) parents of Daniel Pennock, who died after being exposed to land applied sewage sludge. The Pennocks will speak about their experience with land applied sludge, the death of their son, and DEP’s role in encouraging the spreading of sludge.
– Dan Brannen, Esq. (Centre County) the attorney and Township Supervisor who developed the “tipping fee” sludge Ordinance adopted by six Townships in four Counties. Brannen will speak about the Ordinance and recent developments in the Synagro Corporation’s lawsuit against the Rush Township, Centre County Supervisors. In that case, Synagro is attempting to overturn Rush Township’s Sludge Ordinance.
– Tom Linzey, Esq. (Franklin County) an attorney and President of the Community Environmental Legal Defense Fund (CELDF), an organization working with communities and local governments in Pennsylvania to assert local control over sludge corporations. Linzey will speak about Senate Bill 1413, recent developments concerning the Bill, and the issue of corporate power and local governments.
– Len Martin (Centre County) (invited) a community leader and small business owner from Rush Township, Centre County, who will speak about his work with communities and local governments to adopt the “tipping fee” sludge Ordinance. Each speaker will be followed by a Question and Answer session, in which attendees of the event can query each speaker with questions facing their community.
When: Saturday, August 3, 2002, from 12 noon to 4:00 p.m.
Where: The Clarion Hotel and Convention Center (old Embers Hotel), Carlisle, Pennsylvania, at the intersection of I-81 and Route 11 and near the Pennsylvania Turnpike.

Cost: There is no cost to attend this event, which will include the speakers, information packets, and refreshments. No lunch will be provided.
