Project H.O.M.E. Teen Program Summer Intern

The summer intern working with the teen program will oversee and manage the Rittenhouse Square Farmers’ Market and assist with associated tasks as necessary, including extensive work In Project HOME’s community garden.

Project HOME is a non-profit organization in Philadelphia that seeks to end homelessness by providing people with housing, employment opportunities, medical care and education. One of our flagship programs, the HYPE Teen Program, is a college prep program that uses an innovative combination of academic support, internship and entrepreneurship training, college access support and mentoring to help high school students achieve their goals of pursuing post-secondary education.

Every Saturday from May – November, high school (and some middle school- aged youth enrolled in the HYPE Teen Program at the Honickman Learning Center & Comcast Technology Labs sell locally grown produce, beverages and snacks, and Project HOME merchandise at a table at the Rittenhouse Square Farmer’s Market. The summer intern will be responsible for:

Rittenhouse Market:
– Contacting students and/or their parents to confirm weekly participation in the market;
– Packing the van on Saturday mornings and transporting students and materials from the HLCCTL to Rittenhouse Square;
– Overseeing the students while at the market, including but not limited to monitoring breaks, money exchanges and customer service;
– Providing feedback to the students regarding their customer interaction and professionalism;
– Packing up the van and transporting students back to the HLCCTL;
– Assisting with financial statements, inventory and other related tasks as deemed necessary.

Community Garden:
– Working closely with the Sustainability team to plant and harvest vegetables and herbs;
– Supervising and ensuring student participation in the gardening process;
– Helping students understand the “business” side of the garden – i.e. thinking through what plants will be profitable, time investment of harvesting, etc.

Requirements
– Interest in youth development, entrepreneurship and community development.
– Urban gardening experience a plus.
– Experience leading or teaching 14 – 18 year old students preferred.
– Current driver’s license and most Saturday availability (May – November) is MANDATORY.
– Ability to lift 25 pounds.

*Please note, this is a part-time, unpaid internship.
