Edmund A. Stanley, Jr. Research Grants

Request for Proposals
January, 2014 – December, 2014

Background/Goals

National Institute on Out-of-School Time on behalf of the Robert Bowne Foundation is pleased to announce the 2014 National Afterschool Matters Edmund A. Stanley, Jr. Research Grants. With generous funding from the Robert Bowne Foundation, we have NEW FUNDING GUIDELINES. The grant has the following goals

1. Generate and disseminate research about organizations serving youth during the out-of-school hours;
2. Build a network of scholars studying organizations serving youth during the out-of-school hours; and
3. Contribute to basic knowledge and the improvement of practice and policy in the area of youth programs during the out-of-school hours.

We are giving priority to those proposals in which the research team is composed of a partnership — one university-based researcher and one youth worker/practitioner-researcher. Past participants of the National Afterschool Matters Practitioner Fellowship are strongly encouraged to apply with a university-based researcher. This is a national grant competition. Applicants do not have to be located in New York City, nor do they have to conduct research in or about New York City programs.

Two grants in the amount of $25,000 each will be awarded to support either

Original empirical research in or about youth programs during the non-school hours;

Or

Research syntheses or policy analyses of youth programs.

Grant focus

• Professional Development (pre-service or in-service) and its role in program quality improvement and/or youth outcomes;
• Content-based approaches to youth programming (i.e. STEM, English Language and Literacy, etc.) during the Out-of-School Time;
• Studies of Extended Time Learning (ELT): Successes, critical issues, challenges; or
• Employment or Career-related topics – i.e., youth organizations as spaces for training in career or employment skills, youth as workers, community economic development and youth programs.

Note: Evaluations of individual youth programs will not be considered.
