Beyond the Walls: Prison Health Care & Reentry Summit

When: Tuesday, June 10th; 8:30 AM – 5 PM

Where: Pennsylvania Convention Center, 12th & Arch Streets

What: Through panels and workshops, we explore health and re-entry challenges facing persons who are incarcerated and persons re-entering our communities, including HIV, mental health issues, substance use, housing, employment, advocacy, mentorship and educational programs. With a focus on community led responses to the crisis in the criminal justice system, workshops reflect the needs of prisoners and former prisoners and will highlight the work being done to improve conditions inside the prison walls and in the communities to which prisoners are returning.

2014 Keynote Speaker:  Michelle Alexander

Michelle Alexander is a highly acclaimed civil rights lawyer, advocate, and legal scholar.

The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness challenges the conventional wisdom that with the election of Barack Obama as president, our nation has “triumphed over race.” Alexander argues that the sudden and dramatic mass incarceration of African American men, primarily through the War on Drugs, has created a new racial under caste – a group of people defined largely by race that is subject to legalized discrimination, scorn, and social exclusion.

Workshop Submission Guidelines:

·       Workshops submissions are currently OPEN!
·       All submissions are due by Monday, March 3rd at 12 PM. Submissions received after this date will not be considered.
·       ALL submissions must be received electronically through the AEM website, http://www.fight.org/aem
·       ONLY completed submissions submitted through the website will be considered.
·       ALL presenters MUST be contacted and fully committed to being part of the Summit by the date of submission; all submissions must have ALL presenter information completed.
·       The Planning Committee will vote on submissions on Thursday, March 13th.
