For school groups: Chasing Dreams: Baseball and Becoming American
Posted by on January 20, 2014
The National Museum of American Jewish History (NMAJH) invites you and your students to experience Chasing Dreams: Baseball and Becoming American, opening in March 2014. Come see the well-known and lesser-known stories of how Jews and other minorities shaped, and were shaped by, baseball and America.
Through the generosity of individual and corporate donors, the Museumedu is offering scholarships towards admission and transportation to see this exciting exhibition. All Title 1 schools are eligible for a free visit and reimbursement for their transportation with a refundable reservation fee. All other schools are encouraged to apply for scholarship funding towards their visit using the enclosed form.
Specially-designed Common Core-based activities for this visit are also available. We offer the following lessons:
· The Home Team: Baseball, Teamwork, and Community, for primary grades
· The Four Sides of a Baseball Diamond: Identity, Diversity, Integration, and Community, for middle grades
· Breaking Barriers: Baseball, Social Change, and Civil Rights, for upper grades
Chasing Dreams is the first large-scale exhibition to weave together the history of American sport, leisure, and national identity with the story of integration of Jews and other minorities into American life. It evokes 175 years’ worth of baseball’s opening days through stories of professional and amateur players, broadcasters and journalists, owners and executives—and, most of all, fans.
Located on Philadelphia’s Independence Mall, NMAJH is the only museum in the world to tell the 360-year story of the American Jewish experience—a story of immigration, challenge, opportunity, and achievement. With our Chasing Dreams exhibition, you will discover the important role that America’s pastime plays within that story.
Bring your class to experience this one-of-a-kind exhibition from March 13 through October 26, 2014. The Museum’s Group Services team would be delighted to help you schedule a unique learning experience for your group. You can reach them by phone at 215-923-3811 x141 or by email at groups@nmajh.org. Alternatively, you can fill out our convenient online reservation form at http://www.formstack.com/forms/NMAJH-group_visits_inquiry.
Our schedule is filling up. Act now while scholarship funds are available to reserve your spot. We can’t wait to see you on game day!
