COMMUNICATIONS MANAGER, PRE-K CAMPAIGN, SOUTHEAST PA
Four leading nonprofit organizations — Public Citizens for Children and Youth, Delaware Association for the Education of Young Children, Economy League of Greater Philadelphia. and the United Way of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey – are launching an issues-based campaign to increase access to high quality pre-k for young children in PA. The campaign seeks an experienced communications professional to handle the communication operations of the campaign. The Communications Manager reports to the Campaign Director and works collaboratively with communications professionals at all four coalition partner organizations. We are looking for person who can multitask and produce results with little administrative support. The campaign will be fast paced and reliant on opportunistic and free media strategies to build public will. To be selected, the candidate must demonstrate that s/he has a track record of effective impact, a high level of energy, an understanding of a fast-paced campaign environment, high productivity, and the ability to demonstrate passion for the campaign’s goal.
Responsibilities include:
- Writing all press materials including press advisories, press releases, talking points, and ancillary documents necessary to educate reporters and editors
- Ensuring high level of social media visibility through the utilization of creative strategies that optimize Twitter and Facebook as a vehicles to build supporters and keep them informed
- Publishing regular blog posts and disseminating the blog posts so they are widely viewed and to the greatest extent possible, drive the news in the traditional print and broadcast/cable media outlets
- Developing and maintain relationships with reporters working for suburban- and city-based media outlets
- Managing logistics and support the program development for all public events
- Creating press opportunities that strategically insert credible messages into the news cycle to advance the goals and reach of the campaign
- Carefully controlling campaign messaging by working closely with the campaign director and field staff so that all campaign materials are in-sync and on-point
- Writing and managing website/email content and ensuring website content is up-to-date
- Identify opportunities for earned media that derive from the campaign activities and pitch those opportunities to reporters in ways that leads to their coverage
- Tracking media coverage among all outlets and platforms
- Training campaign supporters to be effective spokespersons
- Working with graphic designers for campaign communications designs
- Managing communications interns, as needed
The ideal candidate will have:
- 3-5 years communications experience working with issue or electoral campaigns
- Excellent and sharp writing skills
- Experience editing web-based platforms
- Established media contacts in the Southeast PA region
- Experience leading new and social media for an organization or campaign
- A willingness to work creatively, in a deadline driven atmosphere, and with a low ego quotient – will roll up their sleeves to get the job done
- Comfort working in a collaborative work environment with multiple stakeholders
- Ingrained self-motivation
