Grad Course for Teachers: Literacy and Jewish History
Posted by on June 24, 2013
A Graduate Course in partnership between The Penn Literacy Network & National Museum of American Jewish History
This course explores the relationship between inquiry-based learning and innovative, research-based classroom practices for elementary educators across all curriculum areas. Participants investigate The Penn Literacy Network frameworks of The Five Reading/Writing/Talking Processes and The Four Lenses of Learning and apply them to the National Museum of American Jewish History’s exhibition and content (“living text”).
The course focuses specifically on active engagement with the museum’s living text, learning to understand and navigate living text, and making connections to early settlers, immigration and migration related to a variety of cultures and eras. Educators learn a variety of practical strategies, aligned with The Common Core Standards, to encourage student engagement with rich literacy practices across the curriculum. The teaching and learning focus includes classroom and museum-based experiences for teachers, students and parents. Teachers also engage in learning experiences that are rich in problem-solving, critical thinking and logical reasoning including discussions about how to adapt these approaches for inclusion students.
Upon successful completion participants are awarded 1.5 (.5 CUs) graduate level, continuing education credits from the University of Pennsylvania’s Graduate School of Education. Participants will be responsible for completing course assignments and are encouraged to plan a trip to the museum with their students or colleagues.
