Education Program Coordinator
History and Mission
NSC is a non-profit organization that provides social, educational, and legal services to immigrants and refugees in the greater Philadelphia area. Our strength lies in the diversity of our clients and services. Since NSC’s founding in 1921, our mission has been to help immigrants and refugees participate fully in American society. Each year, we help approximately 4,000 individuals from over 90 countries.
Position Overview
The Education Program Coordinator will provide administrative and operational support for the delivery of high quality educational services for NSC’s Education Department. This position will assist the Director of Education with the recruitment, screening, selection, and training of volunteer ESL teachers. The Education Program Coordinator will maintain and update database records, ensure the availability of course materials and tools, and provide ongoing support to volunteer teachers and students.
The Education Program Coordinator has internal contact with the entire administrative staff and external contact with clients, business partners, government agencies, donors, vendors, community partners, educational resources, visitors, and the general community. This position has access to sensitive NSC information and is expected to handle such information with integrity and professionalism. This position has regular contact with members of the community and is expected to represent NSC in a professional manner.
The Education Program Coordinator reports directly to the Director of Education and participates in department activities as necessary.
Job Responsibilities
• Observe and supervise volunteer teachers and interns and provide constructive feedback related to classroom performance.
• Assist with the recruitment, screening, selection, and training of volunteer teachers.
• Provide assistance to teachers with lesson plan development, materials, and resources.
• Participate in the planning and facilitation of teacher trainings, orientation, and workshops.
• Develop final course schedule each session and communicate course schedule to teachers; find/locate substitute teachers as necessary.
• Help support off-site programming.
• Assist with the pre- and post- testing of students.
• Maintain and update database to include volunteer teachers, student information, course registration, and course completion.
• Maintain inventory of textbooks and other course materials and place supply orders as necessary.
• Provide input for the development of new courses and the improvement of current classes.
• Troubleshoot student concerns.
Non-Essential Functions
1. Attend relevant workshops and join professional groups as necessary for professional growth.
2. Adhere to NSC’s confidentiality guidelines and ensure the appropriate handling of sensitive information.
3. Facilitate and attend relevant staff meetings to promote communication and execution of goals.
4. Complete special projects specific to the function of the Education Department and for NSC as a whole, as directed by the Director of Education.
5. Other duties as assigned within the scope of position expectations.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
A. Understanding of NSC’s mission and the Education Department’s objectives.
B. Ability to work individually as well as part of a larger team.
C. Knowledge of basic linguistics and best practices for teaching ESL.
D. Knowledge of principles of adult learning.
E. Ability to effectively collaborate and communicate with students and volunteers from diverse multicultural and educational backgrounds.
F. Ability to effectively train and manage volunteer teachers.
G. Ability to communicate effectively in writing and verbally to students, business partners, vendors, members of the community, funders, and other stakeholders.
H. Ability to manage multiple tasks by carefully setting priorities, meeting deadlines, and scheduling time efficiently.
I. Basic understanding of computer operations and use a variety of common software programs including Microsoft Office, Access, and Excel.
J. Ability to organize tasks in an efficient manner with strong attention to detail in a fast-paced environment.
K. Strong interpersonal skills.
Experience, Education, and Licensure
Minimum Experience: 1+ years of experience teaching in an ESL/EFL environment, preferably in an adult education program administration role in a non-profit setting.
Minimum Education: BA/BS degree from an accredited college or university. Masters degree in Education, Linguistics, TESOL, or a related field of study is preferred.
Compensation:
The position is full-time and exempt, and includes benefits. Salary is commensurate with experience.
