“Growing Up Homeless”: People’s Emergency Center workshop

Register now for People Emergency Center’s “Growing Up Homeless” workshop.  Two newly released reports will be highlighted, showing the prevalence of homelessness among young children (ages 0-8) and teens (ages 13-18). Academic, behavioral, and health risk factors will be examined in presentations by eminent Philadelphia-area researchers.  Breakout sessions designed to produce discussion on the policy implications of this research and next steps for action will close out this event.

The Growing Up Homeless Workshop will feature two presentations:

·       Youth in Philadelphia: Identifying Youth Who Experienced Homelessness.  PEC’s Visiting Scholar Dr. Staci Perlman of Kutztown University will present findings from a survey — Youth Risk Behavior Survey — taken by youth who are enrolled in the School District of Philadelphia. She will report on an estimate of the prevalence and risk factors of the youth who experienced homelessness.

·       The Educational Well-Being of Young Children Experiencing Homelessness and School Mobility.  Dr. Whitney LeBoeuf of the University of Pennsylvania will present her findings on the prevalence of early childhood homelessness within a cohort of third grade children.  She will enlighten the audience on how experiences of homelessness and school mobility relate to children’s third grade academic achievement and engagement. Dr. LeBoeuf will also suggest what providers should do for children who are in emergency housing.

Episcopal Community Services will present a video conceived by teens who previously experienced homelessness

PEC will introduce its Stoneleigh Emerging Leader Fellow

PEC will unveil its Visiting Scholar’s program.
