National Endowment for the Humanities and American Library Association Announce Updates and Availability of Cash Grants for Muslim Journeys Bookshelf Program
Deadline: October 25, 2012 (Extended)
The National Endowment for the Humanities and the American Library Association have announced updates to the application process and grants available through the Bridging Cultures Bookshelf: Muslim Journeys program.
NEH’s Bridging Cultures initiative is designed to engage the power of the humanities to promote understanding of and mutual respect for people with diverse histories, cultures, and perspectives within the United States and abroad. “Muslim Journeys” is the first in a planned series of Bridging Cultures Bookshelves.
The Muslim Journeys bookshelf includes twenty-five books chosen with a view to familiarizing the American public with Islam and the cultural heritage of Islamic civilizations around the world. In addition, the bookshelf includes a DVD containing a series of short videos on art and architecture, three films, and a one-year subscription to Oxford Islamic Studies Online.
As part of the updated program, the one thousand sites selected to receive the Muslim Journeys Bookshelf will be eligible in January 2013 to receive a programming grant of up to $4,500 to support a Let’s Talk About It reading and discussion series. Only libraries that participate in the Bridging Cultures Bookshelf will be eligible to apply for a Let’s Talk About It cash grant for reading and discussion programming on Muslim Journeys themes.
Public libraries, community college and academic libraries, and state humanities councils are eligible to apply. A single application can be submitted on behalf of multiple libraries within a library system. Individual branch libraries that are not included in a larger system-wide application are also encouraged to apply.
For complete program information, including an FAQ, complete lists of books and films, and resources to help begin an application, visit the NEH Web site.
