An Integrated Approach to Supporting Child Development

SERIES: An Integrated Approach to Supporting Child Development
To promote a more coordinated approach to meeting children’s developmental needs, the brief proposes the adoption of the SERIES paradigm of developmental screening in which each step—Screening, Early identification, Referral, Intake, Evaluation and eligibility, and Services—is seen not as an isolated activity, but rather an integral component of a single process. It then identifies four major barriers to providing coordinated developmental care for children and identifies a policy or practice response to each. The SERIES brief responds to the finding that although developmental screening of children in primary care has increased, many children with identified developmental needs are never linked to the services they need.
