Youth Service America Invites Nominations of Youth Leaders and Young Educators for Harris Wofford Service-Learning Awards
Deadline: July 22, 2012
Youth Service America is accepting nominations of outstanding youth leaders and young educators for the 2012 Harris Wofford Awards.
Sponsored by State Farm, the awards were created to honor those who do extraordinary work toward achieving former Senator Wofford’s vision of “making service and service-learning the common expectation and common experience of every young person in America.”
The Harris Wofford Youth Award will be given to a young person (between the ages of 5 and 25) who is a legal resident of the United States and who demonstrates exemplary commitment to involving his or her peers in service, youth voice, service-learning, or civic engagement activities. While youth nominees should be personally active in volunteering, emphasis should be on their efforts and success in helping to mobilize and inspire the youth of their generation. The nominee’s activities can be focused on the local, state, national, or international level. The award recipient will receive $500 for him/herself and $500 to give to a nonprofit of his or her choice to support program activities.
The Harris Wofford Young Educator Award will recognize an extraordinary young teacher for his or her achievements and contributions toward enhancing the practice of high-quality service-learning. The Young Educator Award will be given to an educator (25 or younger) who is a legal resident of the U.S. and who demonstrates exemplary commitment to service-learning. The nominee’s activities can be focused on the local, state, national, or international level. The recipient will receive a $500 award for him/herself and $500 for his or her service-learning program.
The 2012 Harris Wofford Awards will be presented at the Ninth Annual Youth Service Institute on October 17-19, 2012, in Houston, Texas. Travel, lodging, and registration will be provided for the winners (including an adult chaperone for the youth award winner).
