Do you work with at-risk youth? Do you know of any high school drop-outs in Philadelphia that are looking to get their high school diploma? Do you believe in second chances?
I am writing to tell you a little bit about YouthBuild Philadelphia Charter School and to ask you to urge any of the young people you work with to apply if they qualify for our services.
YouthBuild Philadelphia Charter School is an educational and vocational training program for young adults who have dropped out of school . The one year program grants students a high school diploma as well as:
1. Vocational Training –
Our school offers extensive training in one of three vocational tracks
• Building Trades—students work towards NCCER Certification, learn the basics of construction as well as leadership, teamwork and job readiness skills.
• Healthcare—students earn HHA and CNA Certification and work on internships in various healthcare organizations.
• Technology—students complete Microsoft Office Specialist Certification, prepare for careers in technological fields and refurbish computers for donation.
2. Academics –
Our program employs cooperative learning strategies and project based learning to meet the needs of our students. Many students encountered difficulties in traditional school settings, but thrive in our stimulating and nurturing environment. YouthBuild recognizes that students have different academic needs; to provide the highest level of support and create an individualized experience students are placed in classes based on their skill level.
3. Personal Development –
Through our school’s family atmosphere, case management services, transition services for alumni, men’s and women’s groups and mentoring program.
4. Practical Benefits –
YouthBuild provides incentives for attendance as well as an education award of $2,100.00 for use in a future educational or training program. Transportation is provided for students to get to and from school and uniform shirts are distributed at the beginning of the year.
To be eligible for the program, a candidate must be a resident of Philadelphia between the ages of 18-20 by 8/30/2012 and have dropped out of high school.
