12-month AmeriCorps Member (August 1, 2012 to July 31, 2013): Computer/Design Teaching Assistant position at YouthBuild Philadelphia Charter School, an alternative 12th-Grade-only, diploma-granting high school for high-school dropouts ages 18 to 21.

Background:

YouthBuild Philadelphia Charter School is an education and job-training program for young adults who have dropped out of high school. Students in the program alternate six-week sessions between the classroom site, where they attend academic classes and develop career-related, leadership and life skills, and a vocational-training site (construction, computer technology or nursing) where they develop real-world work skills. Originally chartered in 1997, the School enrolls approximately 220 students each year. Regular hours for this position are from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Member Duties & Responsibilities:

The AmeriCorps Computer/Design Teaching Assistant is required to perform the following duties:

Classroom responsibilities

Provide technology-focused vocational training to high-school students by—

Teaching all necessary components for the Internet and Microsoft Office Suite (MOS) exam;
Teaching web-design for work with outside organizations and the development of student’s personal sites; and
Working with students to refurbish donated computers, which are then redistributed to local organizations.

Program Involvement

Participate in community-service projects in keeping with the school’s strong service-learning emphasis;
Serve as mentor to four or five students.

Requirements

Ability to serve full-time from August 1, 2012 to July 31, 2013
A U.S.citizen, U.S. National, or Lawful Permanent Resident Alien of the United States.
A desire to provide needed educational, technological, or community services to an underserved community while receiving the following benefits:
a living allowance of $13,000,
an education award of about $5,550 (the exact amount of the award is tied to the amount of Pell Grants, which has yet to be determined),
loan forbearance with interest accrual payment,
child care coverage (if applicable), and
health insurance.
Bachelor’s Degree
Motivation and desire to work with urban students.
