Citizen’s Planning Institute opens registration for spring courses

The Citizen’s Planning Institute, Philadelphia’s first educational program designed to engage citizens in the city planning process, has opened its Spring 2012 course application period.

The CPI is the formal education and outreach branch of the Philadelphia City Planning Commission, and its mission is to encourage city residents and neighborhood organizations to take action to shape their own communities.  Residents and organization members are encouraged to apply by the application deadline on March 27th. It is a competitive selection process with a limited number of 30 seats.

The Spring course includes a core course and three elective sessions.  The core course consists of three sessions focused on planning, land use, zoning and the development process.  The elective topics include making Philadelphia a more sustainable city through better design practices, vacant land policy and interventions, and what the new zoning code means for the city’s residents. Completion of the core course and two electives will earn participants a “Citizen Planner Certificate of Completion”.

The core courses begin on April 18th and run through May 2nd. These core classes are a prerequisite to the elective courses, which are scheduled from May 16th to May 30th. There will also be an optional morning workshop held on Saturday, May 12th from 9am to noon. Each session will be held at the Philadelphia City Planning Commission, 18th Floor from 6-9pm and includes a buffet dinner. The core course of three sessions carries a fee of $30 total, while the fee for each elective session is an additional $20.
