ORGANIZATION OVERVIEW
Wilson Community School is a partnership between Alexander Wilson Elementary School of the School District of Philadelphia and the University-Assisted Community Schools (UACS) program operated by the Netter Center for Community Partnerships at the University of Pennsylvania. Wilson Community School (WCS) staff is responsible for developing and coordinating all out-of-school-time (OST) programming at Alexander Wilson Elementary, including the After-School Program, Structured Recess Program, and the Summer Program. WCS has secured significant support from Public Health Management Corporation for its programming, and also works closely with the Graduate School of Education at the University of Pennsylvania. Now in its fourth year, WCS has quickly developed into a dynamic community school that provides quality programs which address the academic and social needs and interests of the scholars and families that we serve, and which is intricately integrated into Wilson Elementary School and the surrounding community.
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The Wilson Community Summer Program (WCSP) operates Monday through Friday, from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, for 6 weeks during the summer (7/2/2012 – 8/10/2012) at Alexander Wilson Elementary School (46th Street & Woodland Avenue). Morning programming consists of enrichment activities based on the WCS Summer Curriculum, an experiential learning program through which scholars learn about subjects and themes such as literacy, numeracy, social and emotional learning, cultural studies, and STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics). Afternoon programming is dedicated to enrichment activities centered on themes such as civics, service, social justice, health and nutrition, ecology and environmental awareness, communications and media, social entrepreneurship, the arts, physical education, and team-building. Weekly field trips are both fun and educational, and weekly family meetings serve as a forum to inform families about current and upcoming events and logistics, share class and individual accomplishments, organize guest speakers and workshops, and to focus on community-building.
