VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
April 20 – 29, 2012

PRE-FESTIVAL SUPPORT (Dates & Times TBA)
Volunteer assistance will be needed before the Festival begins to support a variety of prep projects, such as bag stuffing.

SCIENCE CARNIVAL SUPPORT (Saturday, April 21, 2012, from 7:00 am through 7:30 pm)
An outdoor public carnival, taking place outside of The Franklin Institute around Benjamin Franklin Parkway, the Science Carnival will provide opportunity for engagement and exchange between children, teens, families, and local scientists. Volunteers are needed before, during and after this exciting event, scheduled from 11:00 am – 4:00 pm.  Volunteer opportunities are listed below:
•    EXHIBITOR & VENDOR REGISTRATION (volunteers needed 7:00 am to 7:30 pm – minimum 4 hour shift)
Volunteers are needed to greet exhibitors/vendors upon arrival, assist with load in/out, staff the registration desk, provide directions/walk exhibitors to their booth, and provide general event assistance.  These fast-paced volunteer opportunities will require a lot of walking and some may include minor lifting and cart pushing.
•    STROLLING INFORMATION/INFORMATION BOOTH (volunteers needed  10:30 am to 4:30 pm – minimum 3 hour shift)
Provide carnival attendees with directions to various areas of the event, such as restrooms, refreshments, activity areas, etc. Answer general questions and hand out Carnival maps/brochures.  Volunteers must be outgoing and friendly.  Strolling Information volunteers will walk/stand and must be comfortable approaching carnival attendees.  Information Booth volunteers should be knowledgeable about the city of Philadelphia in order to answer questions.
•    CROSSING GUARDS (volunteers needed 7:30 am to 6:00 pm – minimum 3 ½ hour shift)
Help exhibitors loading in/out as well as Carnival guests cross safely and with the lights at the intersection of 20th Street and Benjamin Franklin Parkway.
•    STAGE MANAGER ASSISTANTS (volunteers needed  10:30 am to 4:30 pm – 6 hour shift)
Volunteers will work with stage managers at show stages.  Will check in talent, escort talent from green rooms to stage and back, provide talent with refreshments, etc.  Must have strong communication skills and be able to walk/stand for long periods of time. There may be down time throughout the day and volunteers are welcome to watch the shows.
•    GREEN ROOM VOLUNTEERS (volunteers needed 10:00 am to 4:30 pm – minimum 3 hour shift)
Volunteers will check in talent at the green room and be in communication with the Stage Manager and their assistants regarding talent, assisting them in directing talent to the various stages.  Provide talent with refreshments and help where needed. There may be down time throughout the day when Volunteers will have Carnival maps/brochures to hand out to Franklin Institute guests, as the Green Room will be located inside the Museum.

EVENT SUPPORT (Dates, Times and Locations TBA)
During the Philadelphia Science Festival there will be a variety of events happening throughout the Philadelphia region celebrating SCIENCE!  Volunteers will be needed to represent the festival, hand out Science Festival brochures and event evaluations, and provide event support.  Events fall under the following categories:
•    Signature Programs- Highly produced and collaborative in nature, Signature Programs will be larger in scale and will occur in theaters and auditoriums throughout the Festival.  These events with have both a hands-on interactive component as well as a performance driven tone.

•    Neighborhood Science- Neighborhood Science programs will take place on April 25, 26, and 29.   Most events will occur at libraries or community centers, bringing science programming to every neighborhood in Philadelphia.

•    Science Cafes & Food Programs- Building on the success of the many food-based programs and cafes that took place in 2011, programs analyzing the science of food, cheese, beer, wine, etc. will again be explored. These events will take place throughout the Festival in bars, restaurants, coffee shops, and parks, in an effort to engage a non-traditional audience in discussions about science.
