ACLAMO Family Centers is a community agency whose mission is to achieve improved access to economic, educational, social and cultural resources and opportunities for low-income residents of Montgomery County, especially those of Spanish language heritage living in Norristown and Pottstown. Since 2001 ACLAMO has run a unique, “ESL family literacy program” serving Spanish-speaking preschoolers, and Spanish-speaking parents year-round.
ACLAMO is seeking a Family Literacy Specialist/Home Visitor to work as part of its innovative “ESL Family Literacy program. Its goals are to foster English language acquisition for children and parents, build basic literacy skills and increase families reading together, and prepare child and parent for success in kindergarten. ACLAMO’s program integrates education, health access and social services, and provides bilingual wrap-around social services, plus access to health and dental screenings for every child. Each family receives monthly home visits guided by lesson plans and literacy-based parent/child activities, and other developmental goals.
The Family Literacy Specialist/Home Visitor assists English language learner children (ages 3-8 years) and families to participate fully in family literacy program; works with the program team to evaluate and address health and social service needs of enrolled children, and provides case management to link program participants to available resources; engages parents and children in literacy-based learning activities in monthly home visits using lesson plans developed by the team; maintains case records for all participants, and assists team to prepare and submit periodic program reports.
This full-time, temporary position (which could become permanent depending on funding availability) offers an excellent opportunity to be a part of a small but effective community-based organization that has provides outcome driven educational programs and services. The successful candidate will have a Bachelor’s degree in education, social work, psychology or nursing, or A.A plus 3 years relevant experience; ability to work effectively with Spanish-speaking parents and preschoolers to implement family literacy lesson plans in weekly home visits; ability to assess child and family health and social service needs, and assist in overcoming language and cultural barriers to access needed resources and services; ability to work collaboratively with a range of institutional and community partners; excellent written and oral Spanish and English proficiency; excellent organizational, administrative, data management and record keeping skills;
computer skills, and ability to obtain state clearances.
