Education Commission of the States’ 12 for 2012 report

The Education Commission of the States has released its “12 for 2012” report, which focuses on 12 issues the commission feels will move education policy forward this year. The commission asserts the 12 policy areas do not represent an exhaustive list of critical issues for the coming year, nor is the report intended to dictate education policy priorities for 2012. Instead, it is intended to stimulate thinking around how best to craft the next steps of powerful education policy across the country. Issue one revolves around Pre-K and expanding its focus to P-3. Issue two is K-12 finance, and creating and maintaining efficiency and financial accountability without lowering expectations. The third issue is blended learning, how to launch it and implement it. Fourth is implementation of the Common Core Standards. The fifth matter is developing civic engagement at the state level absent federal funding. Sixth is teacher quality. Seventh is enhancing the potential of rural education in America. The eighth constitutes data teachers and leaders need to improve student outcomes. The ninth issue is the challenges of individualized instruction, and the tenth is the viability of performance funding. The eleventh is an assessment of remedial education, and the twelfth revolves around teaching credentials.
