Call for Proposals: Sustainability Education Summer Institute

Posted by on January 16, 2012

The Sustainability Education Summer Institute (SESI) 2012 is seeking  concurrent session proposals for this year’s conference on July 23-25, 2012  (Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday).

Concurrent Sessions are presented on Tuesday and Wednesday and are 90 minutes in length.  We’d like the format to be as little talking, and as much doing as possible. The primary audience for SESI sessions are K-12 educators.  If you wish to submit a proposal, please head over to:  http://www.islandwood.org/sesi/rfp

Concurrent Sessions will be arranged in the following three strands:

Introduction to Sustainability Education: Bringing Sustainability Education into your Classroom

This strand is for educators who are just beginning to think about Sustainability Education and want to find out more.  Sessions will focus on helping to define Sustainability Education, and how to practically implement some of the ideas in your classroom.  It will include some curricular projects, ideas on integrating Sustainability Education into current curriculum, and help in understanding key concepts in Sustainability Education – such as Systems Thinking.

Current Trends and Topics In Sustainability: Making Sense for Teachers

This strand will focus on current and emerging ideas and practices being used to address sustainability issues.  These sessions are not designed to provide easy activities you can implement next week, but rather expose you to some of the innovations from a variety of sectors such as: Government/Policy, Food, Transportation, Economics, Energy, Forestry, Water, Community Development, and Architecture.   Sessions in this strand will include consideration of the political context and potential conflicts surrounding these innovations and how to make sense of these in a classroom setting.

Research, Practices & Policies in Sustainability Education

This strand is for those who are already on the path of teaching about sustainability and are looking for more in-depth information on teaching practices, research, policies, and curriculum development in Sustainability Education.  Sessions will address current research on and theoretical basis of Sustainability Education and its effectiveness, what we can learn from research in related fields, and state, national and international policies and programs supporting Sustainability Education.  If you are interested in developing school or district wide Sustainability Education curriculum, this strand will help inform that process from research to practice.

If you wish to submit a proposal, please head over to:  http://www.islandwood.org/sesi/rfp

The deadline for proposals in Friday, February 17, 2012, with notification of acceptances to be sent out in late March.

The Sustainability Education Summer Institute (SESI) 2012 is hosted by IslandWood with co-sponsorship by OSPI, WWU, Facing the Future and the Center for Ecoliteracy.
