Virtual volunteer tax preparers needed

The traditional Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program offers free tax help to people who cannot afford paid professional assistance. Volunteers help prepare basic tax returns for taxpayers with special needs, including persons with disabilities, non-English speaking persons and elderly tax-payers.

For the 2012 tax season, several local community partners are joining forces with the University of Pennsylvania Health System to provide a virtual alternative to UPHS employees who both qualify and can benefit from this opportunity. Qualified employees will come to UPHS’ Corporate Human Resources Office (by appointment and with proper documentation) and meet with a certified VITA volunteer to go through the intake process. Upon verification of documentation, the volunteer will electronically transmit the necessary information to be processed and within 7 days, the Intake Volunteer will receive an electronic copy of the completed taxes submitted by the off-site tax preparer.

Who can become a VITA Volunteer?  Anyone who has a desire to help families in our community can become a VITA volunteer. A tax background is not required. Free training and IRS tax certification is available.
