The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society has been a visionary not-for-profit organization in the Greater Philadelphia Region since its founding in 1827. PHS organizes the annual Philadelphia International Flower Show, the world’s largest and longest-running indoor flower show, which brings 250,000 visitors and creates a $61 million economic impact to the city. PHS’s Philadelphia Green helps transform lives through revolutionary programs like City Harvest, which has grown and donated 77,000 lbs of fresh produce in three years—helping to feed 1,000 families each week of the growing season. PHS will also lead the new Plant One Million, an ambitious program to plant one million trees in the tri-state region of Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware.

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society’s (PHS) Roots to Re-Entry Job Training and Placement Program gives inmates at the Philadelphia Prison System (PPS) a chance to develop new skills, gain hands-on landscaping and horticultural experience, and pursue meaningful employment upon their release. PHS is currently seeking an ambitious individual with strong landscape, horticultural knowledge and small scale nursery production, as well as strong managerial and organizational skills. The crew chief is responsible for supporting the Project Manager by applying lessons taught in class to hands-on training. The individual reports directly to the Project Manager. Successful applicants must be able take direction, work with minimal supervision and be reliable and hard working.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Take classroom lessons and apply it to onsite projects and work
Teach all aspects of landscape maintenance and techniques
Take periodic inventory of tools and supplies
Anticipate any materials that may be needed for projects
Monitor each participant through evaluations and progress forms
Communicate program needs and issues to Project Manager
Oversee the maintenance and operations of training site and greenhouse.
Other duties as assigned
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS:
Ability to facilitate 5-6 participants effectively
Good verbal and written communication skills
Ability to understand and anticipate the needs of participants
Experience in operation and maintenance of power equipment and hand held tools used in the landscape industry, including but not limited to commercial mowers, line trimmers, and chainsaws.
Supervisory experience in the landscaping industry.
Background in estate management a plus.
Ability to propagate woody and herbaceous plant material by cutting, seed and plugs.
Valid PA Drivers License and clean, safe driving record
