UWSEPA hosts expert on child development

United Way’s Healthy Parenting Initiative will sponsor a special symposium to introduce the Neurosequential Model of Therapeutics by Bruce D. Perry, M.D., Ph.D. at the American Philosophical Society on Wednesday, November 2nd.

Dr. Perry is the Senior Fellow of The ChildTrauma Academy, a not-for-profit organization based in Houston and adjunct Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Northwestern University School of Medicine in Chicago. Dr. Perry is the author, with Maia Szalavitz, of The Boy Who Was Raised As A Dog, a bestselling book based on his work with maltreated children and Born For Love: Why Empathy is Essential and Endangered, published in April of 2010.

Over the last thirty years, Dr. Perry has been an active teacher, clinician and researcher in children’s mental health and the neurosciences holding a variety of academic positions.

United Way is partnering with Dr. Perry and The ChildTrauma Academy to bring The Neurosequential Model in Caregiving to the greater Philadelphia community. Diane Wagenhals, Program Director for the Institute for Family Professionals, is a current Fellow at the ChildTrauma Academy and will be taking a leadership role in bringing this training curriculum to the childcare community in Philadelphia and southeastern Pennsylvania.

The program will begin with an overview of United Way’s vision for a trauma-informed community with Dr. Sandra Bloom, Founder of Sanctuary programs and Associate Professor at Drexel University’s School of Public Health.

The event will take place from 8:30am to noon and continental breakfast will be provided.
