JOB DESCRIPTION
CHIEF DEVELOPMENT OFFICER
THE ORGANIZATION The Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Pennsylvania SPCA) is a non-profit animal welfare organization that has been working to improve the lives of animals since its founding in 1867. With programs ranging from rescuing animals from abuse to low-cost veterinary services and pet adoption, the Pennsylvania SPCA is the largest animal welfare organization in Pennsylvania and the surrounding mid-Atlantic region.
SUMMARY The Chief Development Officer reports to and partners with the Chief Executive Officer as a key member of the executive team. The CDO’s primary duties are to ensure the organization’s stability and growth by developing and implementing short and long-term growth strategies and identifying and addressing development issues and opportunities. As an organizational leader the CDO fosters a culture of philanthropy within the organization and assures that the organization’s corporate culture, systems and procedures support development activities and vice versa.
Succeeding in this environment will require taking a hands-on approach to connecting with a broad array of donors and stakeholders through both traditional and innovative development methods while implementing and/or refining the infrastructure required for developing sustained annual stewardship.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES
Partner with the CEO & Board of Directors on strategic, multi-year planning for development that achieves targeted organizational goals, participate in the ongoing strategic planning process as an integral member of the senior management team; provide strategic recommendations to the CEO based on analysis and projections and to address new challenges as they arise.
Plan, coordinate and assure implementation of strategies to develop donors and contributions to support the organization; assure development and maintenance of appropriate systems including but not limited to volunteer and donor management, research and cultivation, gift processing and recognition; and maintain accountability and compliance standards for donors and funding sources.
Manage and grow an appropriately lean fundraising team scaled to the results and requirements of the overall fundraising effort; develop and direct development team.
Engage other members of the senior management team to facilitate cross department collaboration and effective working relationships; engage the board, the development committee and any board adviser(s) around issues and opportunities for enhancing the effectiveness of the overall development efforts.
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS, QUALIFICATIONS & QUALITIES REQUIRED
Broad based knowledge of development and a record of personal success in raising money through mass outreach, major gifts from individuals and annual giving campaigns, businesses, foundations and corporations with experience building relationships.
An ideal candidate is proactive and creative; possessing a sense of urgency that aligns with a passion for the mission; with evidence of having worked as a true development partner to the CEO or Executive Director and Board Chair or President of a not-for-profit organization.
Skill in examine, develop, reengineer and recommend development tactics, strategies and accompanying policies and procedures.
Strong analytical skills and experience taking a strategic vision into an operational model.
A collaborative and flexible style with strong service mentality. Needs to be seen as a team player who is committed to lifelong learning.
A hands-on manager with integrity and a desire to work in a dynamic mission- driven environment.
An effective communicator with strong oral and written skills.
Strong commitment to developing team members.
A demonstrated commitment to the social sector with passion for the organization’s mission.
IMMEDIATE PRIORITIES
Thoroughly understand the Pennsylvania SPCA – its programs, history, culture, constituencies and values; understand its base of financial support and the short and long-term funding requirements of all segments of the organization.
Develop strong relationships with and secure the trust and confidence of the Chief Executive Officer, Chief Operating Officer, Chief Financial Officer, board chair, development committee chair of the board of directors and others critical to development efforts.
Actively engage in a leadership role with the Chief Executive Officer, staff leadership team and development committee in co-creating a three year development plan.
IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR Chief Executive Officer
HOURS FLSA STATUS: EXEMPT POSITION Minimum of 8 hours per day, 40 hours per week. Daily hours and days of the week may vary according to the needs of the department schedule. Includes weekends, night, holiday and on-call work.
INTRODUCTORY ASSESSMENT PERIOD The introductory assessment period runs from the date of hire for ninety days thereafter. For employment in any position with the Pennsylvania SPCA, this introductory assessment period is the period during which the specifics of the job are learned.
EMPLOYMENT There is no minimum period of employment guaranteed or implied by acceptance of an employment offer. It is the policy of Pennsylvania SPCA that even exempt positions are governed by the needs of the agency, which means that employment is for no specified term and either the Pennsylvania SPCA or the employee, may terminate that employment at any time. The Chief Executive Officer has final authority over these decisions and determinations.
