About the Philadelphia Teacher Residency Program (PTR)
The Philadelphia Teacher Residency (PTR) is a program of the Philadelphia Education Fund (Ed Fund) in partnership with the School District of Philadelphia, the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers and the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education. PTR is a teacher preparation program that prepares Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics [STEM] professionals and recent graduates with strong STEM backgrounds to teach math and science, grades 6 – 12, in Philadelphia public schools. The program is a replication of Residency programs in other urban communities including Boston, Denver and Chicago, which boast 3-year teacher retention rates of over 85%. PTR receives technical assistance from the Urban Teacher Residency United (UTRU), a non-profit organization that supports a national network of urban teacher residencies.
PTR uses the medical residency model to re-imagine fieldwork. Residents (student teachers) learn at-the-elbow of mentor teachers for an entire school year, while simultaneously pursuing teaching certification and rigorous Master’s degree coursework at the University of Pennsylvania’s Graduate School of Education (Penn GSE) for 12 months. PTR Residents must commit to teaching in Philadelphia public schools for at least three years after their residency year. PTR provides professional support throughout this teaching commitment.
Additionally PTR is an AmeriCorps program. Residents, as Americorps members serve between 900 and 1700 hours in service to providing high quality math or science education to youth in Philadelphia high need schools. In return, Residents receive tuition assistance and a living stipend during the Residency year.
Responsibilities
The Recruitment Manager will identify STEM professionals and recent graduates who are seeking to transition into the math and science teaching career. The Recruitment Manager will create recruitment initiatives and develop marketing tools to accomplish his or her goals. As leader of this effort, the Recruitment Manager will collaborate with PTR staff; PTR partner institutions; the Philadelphia Math and Science Coalition; counterparts in other regional certification programs; counterparts in other Residency programs and HR officers from regional businesses. The Recruitment Manager is in charge of all activities related to enrolling Residents into the program including various events throughout the year that bring candidates together with existing Residents and staff. Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Assist with the development of traditional marketing materials
• Lead the development of a web-based campaign that utilizes social networks, and employment search engines
• Plan, implement and attend recruitment events such as information sessions and job fairs
• Serve as the primary point person for inquiries and phone screen candidates
• Manage the application tracking system (Hirebridge) to maintain detailed information on candidates and the activities that generate candidates
• Devise recruitment efforts and evaluate the efficacy of those efforts
• Cultivate leads and support applicants throughout the application process
• Prepare progress reports and budgets for director
• Conduct the PTR/AmeriCorps orientation and other activities to formally enroll Residents into the program
• Organize various social activities amongst candidates and existing Residents
• Orchestrate three PTR selection days across the recruitment year
Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree
• Recruitment experience preferred
• Background in math or science related fields a plus
• Experience in the Philadelphia schools a plus
• Experience with web-based application tracking systems
• Excellent communications skills, both oral and written
• Strong facility in using web based advertising tools and databases
• Experience with online social networking
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team
• Excellent interpersonal skills, able to maintain lasting professional relationships
• Excellent organizational skills including the ability to work quickly under deadline and to handle many tasks at one time
• Experience working with diverse (race/ethnicity, age, and professional) constituencies
• A customer service approach to recruiting
Reporting
The Recruitment Manager reports to the Director of the Philadelphia Teacher Residency program.
