BACKGROUND:
YouthBuild Philadelphia Charter School is a 12th-Grade-only program of academics and job-training for young adults between the ages of 18 and 21 who have dropped out of high school. The School enrolls approximately 220 students each year and was originally chartered as a diploma-granting school in 1997. Students alternate between six-week sessions of academic instruction and one of an array of vocational-training programs, including building trades, computer technology, and healthcare. Regular hours for this position are from 7:30 am to 3:30 pm.
MISSION:
Our mission is to provide out of school youth in Philadelphia with the broadest range of tools supports and opportunities available to become self sufficient, responsible and productive citizens in their community. The emphasis is on transitioning them successfully so that they will succeed in top-quality training schools, colleges, union apprenticeship programs, other careers and the competitive world beyond.
JOB DESCRIPTION:
Building-Trades Operations:
o Teach carpentry and related skills (including demolition, rough framing, roofing, drywall, finish carpentry, etc.) to YouthBuild Building Trades students
o Teach the proper use and handling of all hand tools, power tools, and equipment to students
o Prepare students for certification tests
o Assist in the teaching of certification courses
o Provide oversight for one or more construction sites
o Schedule, implement, and assign tasks and timelines for construction tasks and projects
o Conduct and document safety meetings and inspections
o Interface with subcontractors and inspectors on-site
o Complete job site reports, including daily reports, monthly progress reports, accident and incident reports, tool check lists, students attendance and grades, change orders, and back charge documentation
o Maintain responsibility for material needs of job site, as well as all tools and equipment for job site
o Maintain responsibility for production timelines and individual project deadlines
o Submit grades in a timely fashion according to established deadlines
o Attend weekly all staff and department meetings and other meetings as required by Directors of Vocational Programming and Business Development.

o Believe deeply in the mission and values of YouthBuild Philadelphia
o Hold high expectations for each student in the school
o Model professional behavior for students at all times
o Exhibit positive rapport with students
o Develop teamwork and leadership skills of students
o Oversee monitoring of students’ time and grades on the construction site.
Program Involvement:
o Participate in the School’s Mentoring Program
o Participate in one or more extra curricular activities—such as basketball, yearbook committee, prom committee.
Professional Development:
o Continue to develop skills through trainings and professional development offered at the school and outside
o Attend retreats, workshops, and conferences, as required.
Other duties as assigned by the Directors of Vocational Programming and Business Development.
QUALIFICATIONS:
YouthBuild Philadelphia requires the following qualifications for this position:
– PA Criminal, PA Child Abuse, and Federal/FBI Background Checks
– At least three years of professional construction experience working with all elements of housing construction.
– Good “finishing” skills and experience with project-based construction work.
– Experience managing work crews and construction sites
– Experience working in a team setting.
– Ability to work enthusiastically with young people who have not completed high school.
– Strong communication skills.
– Ability to adapt from construction environment to school environment.
