Philadelphia FIGHT is a comprehensive AIDS service organization providing state of the art, culturally competent, HIV primary care, and opportunities for clinical research, social services, consumer education, and outreach to people living with HIV and those at high risk. Our goal is to end the AIDS epidemic within the lifetime of people living with HIV now. The Youth Health Empowerment Project (Y-HEP) is one of Philadelphia FIGHT’s Education Programs. Y-HEP works to engage and empower high risk and vulnerable youth ages 13-24 to make healthy choices about their lives through a comprehensive range of services. The Y-HEP Education Coordinator is responsible for overseeing and facilitation of the CDC approved intervention VOICES which is a one session intervention. In addition, the Y-HEP Education Coordinator is responsible for the coordination of all community and school based sexual health, HIV and Healthy Relationship workshops. They will be responsible for developing curriculum for all of Y-HEPs educational workshops and groups. This position will oversee Youth Peer Educators and student internships at Y-HEP. The Education Coordinator represents Philadelphia FIGHT both on site and in the community, in a courteous, efficient manner that reflects the high level of integrity and customer service mandated by Philadelphia FIGHT.
Specialized Responsibilities
Coordination of the VOICES Intervention
1) Implement the CDC approved intervention, VOICES, a one-session sexual health and HIV risk reduction workshop with young people ages 13-24, with fidelity.
2) Recruit participants to VOICES
3) Schedule VOICES sessions on-site at Y-HEP and Off-site
4) Prepare all materials for VOICES sessions
5) Run and teach the VOICES Sessions
6) Maintain, file, and enter all data on VOICES participants as required by Y-HEP, Philadelphia FIGHT, and VOICES funders.
7) Prepare monthly and quarterly reports in a timely manner.
Coordination of Community and School-based Sexual Health, HIV, and Healthy Relationship Workshops
1) Actively build community and school partnerships for Y-HEP to provide one-time and ongoing workshops
2) Field all requests and schedule all outside inquiries for Y-HEP staff and Peer Educators to present workshops.
3) Develop, revise and update curriculum for Y-HEP groups and trainings.
4) Train, educate, and develop Y-HEP’s Peer Education team of young people to assist in off-site workshops.
5) Supervise and schedule Peer Educators to go to off-site workshops with Y-HEP staff.
6) Work collaboratively with CTR to schedule workshops and rapid HIV Testing to happen simultaneously.
7) Promote Y-HEP and recruit new youth to the Empowerment Center while off-site delivering workshops
8) Create overall outreach and community presentation schedule and deliver presentations during AIDS Education Month in June, a Philadelphia FIGHT Education Department initiative that reaches over 6000 people every year.
9) Coordinate specialized programming in the Philadelphia public schools during AIDS Education Month.
10) Oversee the dance4life, an international HIV education program using dance to push back the spread of HIV, in Philadelphia middle and high schools, train dancers and Peer Educators to deliver assemblies and workshops, and collect and maintain data about Y-HEP’s dance4life program.
Supervises Peer Educators, Bachelor and Master Level Interns
1) Responsible for fielding requests and scheduling interviews with prospective interns.
2) Create a formalized program for interns and Peer Educators at Y-HEP.
3) Develop intern responsibilities and tasks and appropriately orientate them to Y-HEP.
4) Supervise interns and ensure that they are progressing with their goals.
5) Identify, select and train Y-HEP youth to become Peer Educators through the Peer Education Academy.
6) Develop the current Peer Educator curriculum
7) Create guidelines and procedures for Peer Educators
8) Provide educational and facilitation opportunities for interns and Peer Educators
Additional Responsibilities
1) Attend monthly Y-HEP staff and weekly supervision meetings, clinical supervision, and other programmatic Philadelphia FIGHT meetings.
2) Assist in the overall coordination and planning of all Youth-related activities during AIDS Education Month including the Youth Outreach, Education, and Empowerment Summit
3) Collaborate with other agencies in local events, meetings, and programs that are related to job duties.
4) Attend all required AACO trainings.
5) Assist the Y-HEP Program Director in developing new relationships and implementing new educational programming for Y-HEP.
6) May be called on to interface with the media.
7) Supervise interns and Peer Educators and evaluate staff /or intern performance.
8) Assist and support Empowerment Center activities when onsite.
9) Support and Promote Y-HEP by attending health fairs and outreach when necessary.
10) Enrollment and completion of the AACO CTR trainings are compulsory.
11) Provide rapid HIV testing onsite and offsite when necessary.
Job Requirements
• Education: This position requires a minimum preference of a baccalaureate degree with preference for a master’s degree.
• Experience: This position requires a minimum of five years working with youth.
• Skills: Certified tester is preferred. Demonstrated experience working with high-risk populations and facilitating groups; excellent reading skills and deductive reasoning skills; excellent communications, interpersonal skills and collaborative skills; flexible, self-motivated, organized, able to work well under pressure; computer literacy required; knowledge of Spanish desirable.
• Miscellaneous: Must be able to get to work on a daily basis and on time. Must be able to work cohesively with others and must be able to take feed back and constructive criticism.
