CWI’s Summer WEST places a focus on using field tested service-learning best practices to engage students and contribute to sustainable communities.  Summer WEST will be held at The University of Southern California, in Los Angeles. Workshops will include curriculum and programs drawn from one of the world’s most vibrant and diverse urban settings. USC’s campus is located in the heart of Los Angeles’ Downtown Arts and Education Corridor with easy access to many points of interest.

Overview of Summer WEST
CWI’s Summer WEST is a professional development experience for K–16 and community educators, administrators, and partners. We provide training and models—supported by a variety of resources and strategies—for developing and articulating a classroom, program, or institution’s approach to service-learning. Participants will enhance their practice and thinking around sustainability, service-learning, and place-based education. are staffed by a team of veteran practitioners with wide diversity of experience. more information

A Week of Accomplishment
CWI Summer Institutes are intensive five day events designed to maximize participant learning and accomplishments. We emphasize the use of service-learning best practices including interactive trainings and opportunities for dialogue with experienced practitioners and fellow participants. Structured planning and reflection time is provided for individual and group work. Study Groups provide participants with an important smaller group opportunity to share their projects and enjoy feedback, suggestions and support from their fellow participants. Alumni have noted this aspect as one of the most exciting of the opportunities available at the Institute. Experienced practitioners share curriculum exemplars, resources and teaching tools. Exemplars drawn from the field are used to illustrate the ways in which service-learning can become a deeply integrated feature of curriculum with clearly articulated connections to standards. Participants develop an Integrated service-learning instructional or site plan to meet their own educational goals. Post Institute implementation support is available. more

Who Should Attend
K-16 teachers, community based educators, administrators, and program trainers and leaders. CWI Institutes are appropriate for beginner to veteran practitioner. Alumni include: individuals and groups of K-12 classroom teachers and specialists; VISTA and AmeriCorps members; pre-service teachers; community based educators and leaders; board members; and educators and leaders from the higher education community.

Professional certificates for 45 hours will be issued upon successful completion of Institute work.
