Three D’s of Adult Education: Learning Difficulties, Differences, and Disabilities

SYMPOSIUM DESCRIPTION
Three D’s of Adult Education: Learning Difficulties, Differences, and Disabilities is intended for professionals (instructors, case managers, social workers) working with adults who face challenges with educational attainment. Some of the most vulnerable populations who face these challenges include ex-offenders, juvenile delinquents, non custodial parents, families receiving DHS services and families with socioeconomic issues. Presenters, Drs. Richard Gacka and Richard Cooper, are leaders in the field of
adult learning differences. They will discuss how learning problems manifest as both primary and
secondary causes to problems for adults.

Breakout sessions will include discussions pertaining to social policy that affect family and individuals with educational issues, academic attainment and acquisition of employment. Participants will have the opportunity to reflect on experiences within their program and discuss strategies to help adults with special learning needs.

Participants will take away critical knowledge of how to better understand and support adult learners’ educational needs which ultimately cultivates economic and family stability.

Descriptions
Dr. Richard Gacka is currently the Director of the NW PA Professional Development Center. In addition, he is a PA Licensed Psychologist and served as an examiner for the PA Office of Vocational Rehabilitation for more than 31 years. He has 43 years of experience in the field of Education including service as a Speech Therapist, Special Education Administrator, Lecturer at Penn State University, School Psychologist, and Special Projects. He is a member of the Northwest PA Workforce Investment Board and is the chairperson of the Research and Quality Committee. At the 2009 PA Association for Adult and Continuing Education (PAACE) Mid-Winter Conference in Hershey, PA, Dr. Gacka was awarded the PAACE Outstanding Educator award.

Richard Cooper, Ph.D., is the Director and Founder of the Center for Alternative Learning, earned his doctorate in Education at the University of Pittsburgh and a Masters degree in Guidance and Counseling at Inter American University in Puerto Rico. He is also the owner of Learning disAbilities Resources. Dr. Cooper is the author of a number of books and articles about learning disabilities, problems and differences. He has presented at national and international conferences and summer teacher training institutes around the country. In addition he has conducted courses for adult education teachers and training workshops for facilities at many colleges and universities. He has developed a number of graduate level courses on learning problems. As part of his private practice, Dr. Cooper conducts screening for learning problems and disabilities and specialized tutoring for children and adults who learn differently.
