Advocacy Coordinator, Neighborhood Interfaith Movement
Posted on: March 2, 2011
Neighborhood Interfaith Movement (NIM), Philadelphia, seeks an Advocacy Coordinator (20 hrs/week) to direct Early Childhood Education advocacy efforts and create the structure for ongoing advocacy work on issues of concern to NIM and the communities it serves.
Tasks:
• Identify media venues for submitting letters and articles for publication from NIM staff; writing those articles and creating other communications materials
• Mobilize existing NIM supporters (donors, congregations, childcare providers, long-term care directors and staff, local residents) to advocate on behalf of social justice issues, with an emphasis on NIM areas of expertise
• Assist in establishing relationships with elected officials and government agencies
• Create community educational events and mobilize participation in them
• Create opportunities for residents/stakeholders to communicate with policy makers and elected officials about issues of concern to them and to NIM
• Identify and establish partnerships with neighborhood stakeholders and organizations (other advocacy organizations, community and business leaders, local residents and groups not yet part of NIM’s orbit)
Skills and Qualifications
• Outgoing personality
• Strong listening skills
• Facility at making connections
• Sensitivity to the varied cultural/neighborhood systems within which individuals and groups operate
• Marketing and advertising talents (motivational speaking, exciting written and oral communication ability, desktop publishing)
• Ability to translate information into a coherent organizational system
• Experience putting together community-based forums
• Strategic as well as tactical thinking capabilities
• While it would be preferable to find someone with a background in working with children and a fluency in Spanish or another language prevalent among immigrants in Philadelphia, the individual with solid skills as described above would probably have experience gaining expertise in new issues and in overcoming language barriers.
